Word of the day @ 10:30 am

Current Mood: busy busy

I suck at english, really I do. My vocabulary is fairly limited, I've known people are not native speakers of it who use words I haven't the foggest notion what they mean.
So today (and probably only today) I'm having a word of the day!

Current Mood: predatory predatory

"The centerpiece of his strategy [to drastically reduce female cancer rates] is a redesigned oral contraceptive that would block ovulation without the use of the high levels of synthetic ovarian hormones in current day oral contraceptives."
Gosh darn, I had that very same idea a year ago. Sure pregnancy has benefits as far as preventing some female cancers, but we live in a human-made world where we aren't limited by what can naturally occur.

In other news: grades are doing OK- I know I'll get a better GPA than I had last semester. I get to give a lecture in one of my classes! That's something I've never done before (well, I've given presentations, but everyone had to give presentations).

I fear for this country's future... @ 09:59 pm

Really, it's scary. I was talking to this kid, he's 15. Anyway he's rambling about conspiracy theories as if they're real, so I send him a link about the NSA wiretapping and he's like "so what's the big deal? it's good that they do that, they'll catch bad guys."
I honestly am flabbergasted for about a minute. I point out to him that listening in on random conversations is not very likely to catch any "bad guys" only innocent people's conversations. I add that that's a violation of privacy.
Then he says the stupidest thing I've ever heard anyone say, "who needs privacy?"
That's why I don't get along well with teenagers. Frankly they don't know any better (but think they know it all) and trying to explain things to them is time consuming and largely thankless.

Interesting tidbit I've found @ 11:40 am

Ritalin and Adderal are believed to inhibit monoamine oxidase. Monoamine oxidase has to subtypes, MAO-A and MAO-B. MAO-A is vital in the inactivation of certain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. It is important in the digestion of food, especially in the catabolism of monoamines. MAO-B breaks down phenethylamine. Both are believed to break down dopamine. The genes for MAO are located on the X-chromosome. (Wikipedia)
A disorder of MAO would certainly not only explain the frequence of co-morbidity of other MAO-influenced disorders (depression, anxiety, social problems, etc) with ADHD, but also how it affects boys five times as often as girls. (Although it is also very plausable that females are merely underdiagnosed.)

New LJ-icon... On a more positive note:
- I had the top scores in the first exam in two of my classes
- I'm pretty sure I did well on the other two (I'm next to positive I got 100% on one, and +90% on the other)
- I have a job interview on Wednesday, at a national very well known place

So yeah, life is good but busy...

I don't know why I'm posting this @ 08:33 pm

But anyway, here's my comments on the new Avatar: The Last Airbender, season.

Current Mood: bitchy bitchy

Your Inner Blood Type is Type A

You seem cool and collected, though a bit shy.

You are highly driven and a perfectionist, but that's a side you keep to yourself.

Creative and artistic, you are a very unique person who doesn't quite fit in.

People accept you more than you realize, seeing you as trustworthy and loyal.

You are most compatible with: A and AB

Famous Type A's: Britney Spears and Hilter

If my real blood type is A, I'm going to cry. Being compared to Hilter and Britney Spears is enough to drive any sane person mad.

Long semi-boring paper @ 08:27 am

Current Mood: indescribable indescribable

Here's the first paper I turned in for my independent study. Here's a warning, it's fairly dry and is 8 pages double spaced.

One of my favorite quotes... @ 05:22 pm

Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life... You give them a piece of you. They didn't ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like 'maybe we should be just friends' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. I hate love.
--Neil Gaimen (I think it was said by a character in one of his comics, I'm horribly forgetful though.)
